Why Choose Meryta sinclairii nz?

Meryta sinclairii is admired for more than just its good looks. This New Zealand native is extremely hardy in coastal regions, thriving where other plants may struggle with salty winds and sandy soils. Puka can reach up to eight metres tall, but is easily pruned to keep a full, shrubby form—perfect as a feature tree or bold backdrop in sub-tropical and modern gardens. Its huge, paddle-shaped leaves add volume and a sense of calm, while its upright growth keeps garden spaces open and airy.

Because it flourishes in moist, free-draining soils, Meryta sinclairii nz is versatile for urban gardens and lifestyle blocks alike. Its evergreen nature provides year-round interest, and the tree’s robust, low-branching habit offers shelter and privacy where you need it.

Landscaping Ideas and Plant Combinations

Puka’s large, glossy foliage pairs beautifully with fine-textured natives and other bold evergreens. Use it as a privacy screen or dramatic focal point in the landscape. For contrasting foliage colour and form, consider pairing with Meryta sinclairii 'Cream Edge'—a variegated version of Puka with creamy leaf margins—or the contemporary Meryta sinclairii 'Moonlight', which boasts luminous chartreuse leaves.

To further enhance structural diversity in your garden, mix Puka with companions like Pittosporum Wonder Screen for hedges, Podocarpus hallii (Halls Totara) for native shelter, or add flowering highlights with Magnolia Solar Flair (Solar Flair Magnolia Tree). For windbreaks or to break the canopy, Cupressus Brunniana Aurea (Cupressus macrocarpa Brunniana Aurea ) and Tilia Spring Glow (Tilia Tree) are excellent companions.

How to Grow Meryta sinclairii in New Zealand

Meryta sinclairii nz is best planted in a sheltered site with plenty of light and protection from frost, particularly when young. Puka is tolerant of a range of soil types as long as there’s good drainage. Water well during dry spells while plants are establishing. Once mature, Puka is relatively low maintenance, with minimal pruning needed to maintain shape, and rarely troubled by pests or diseases. In colder regions, plant in a spot protected from southerly winds and consider mulching to buffer root zones against chilly winters.
