Betula platyphylla Japonica is a variety of Birch grown for its impressive, white stems and lovely form. It grows with an upright, conical habit and carries large, dark green leaves held on dark stems. The leaves and stems contrast well with the white trunk. Through autumn the leaves develop impressive golden tones before falling as it reaches 10 m tall and 6 m wide. Commonly known as the Lawson Cypress, this is a large conifer with an upright growth habit. The foliage is feathery, somewhat loosely held, and green-yellow in colour. Older foliage does tend to be dark green. It grows with a pyramidal habit and can reach 50 m tall and 15 m wide. It grows best on a well-drained site in full sun, and is tolerant of frost, coastal environments, cool climates, and wind. This low maintenance conifer is commonly grown for shelter, trimmed into a large hedge, planted for erosion control, or grown as a specimen in a park or large garden.
