Grevillea New Blood is a fast growing, dense shrub which is grown for its spikes of exquisite, bright red, spider-like flowers during winter and spring. These are held abreast of the fine, mid-green foliage as it grows to 30 cm tall and 1 m wide. Grevillea New Blood is commonly included in a border planting, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, planted around outdoor living areas, or grown to attract birds. It is also great for providing winter colour and looks stunning when allowed to cascade over rocks, slopes, or walls.

Features and Benefits

Grevillea Juniperina New Blood is prized for its dense, spreading growth habit, typically reaching 30–40cm in height and up to 1m in width. Its needle-like foliage forms a rich green carpet, topped from autumn to spring with masses of deep red blooms. These flowers not only create striking visual interest but also provide an abundant food source for tūī and other native birds. Its tough, drought-tolerant nature means Grevillea Juniperina New Blood performs well even in coastal gardens or exposed sites with poor soils.

Planting and Care Tips

For optimal results, plant Grevillea Juniperina New Blood in a sunny position with well-draining soil. It's ideal for both urban gardens and rural properties, easily fitting into native-themed plantings or mixed borders. Water during establishment, then allow the plant to settle into its hardy nature—Grevillea New Blood copes well with dry spells once established. Occasional pruning helps encourage new growth and maintain a tidy shape. Avoid fertilisers high in phosphorus, as grevilleas and many other Australian natives are sensitive to these additives.

Companion Planting and Groundcover Solutions

Pair Grevillea Juniperina New Blood with other resilient groundcovers and native shrubs for layered landscaping and extended flowering. Consider adding a mix of textures and flower colours for year-round interest. For example, explore Grevillea Bronze Rambler (Groundcover Grevillea) and Grevillea Gaudichaudii (Grevillea x gaudichaudii) for complementary foliage and flower forms. You could also combine Grevillea New Blood with Casuarina Shagpile or Banksia Roller Coaster for additional drought tolerance and erosion control.

Other natives, such as Lotus Red Flash, Hibbertia Little Rocker, and Myoporum parvifolium (Creeping Myoporum), offer excellent groundcover solutions to complement Grevillea Juniperina New Blood.

Landscape Inspiration

Grevillea Juniperina New Blood suits contemporary, native, and wildlife-friendly gardens alike. Its compact habit makes it a great choice for small spaces, slopes, and beside pathways, where its vivid flowers will brighten the landscape. For more upright options or contrasting flower colours, consider Grevillea Cream and Green (Cream and Green Grevillea), Grevillea Gold Rush (Gold Rush Grevillea), or Grevillea Red Clusters (Red Clusters Grevillea).

Grevillea Juniperina New Blood delivers reliable, low-maintenance beauty—perfect for creating habitat and colour throughout New Zealand gardens.
