Alnus cordata, commonly known as the Italian Alder, is a deciduous tree that features glossy, bright green leaves. As autumn progresses the leaves turn brown but unlike most other deciduous plants the dead leaves are retained on the tree well into winter which creates an interesting feature. It grows with a pyramidal shape to eventually reach 25 m with a spread of 8 m. Alnus cordata is a versatile and attractive tree that is great for challenging locations where it is often trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, planted for shelter, or simply grown as a specimen.

Alnus jorullensis, commonly known as the Evergreen Alder or Mexican Alder, is a fast-growing tree that produces a broad crown of open and drooping branches. The branches host dark green leaves with serrated edges and while it will generally be evergreen, in cooler climates it may become deciduous or semi-deciduous as it reaches 10 m tall and 6 m wide. Alnus jorullensis is commonly grown as a specimen, used for screening and shelter, trimmed into a hedge, or planted in the wetter areas of a garden or alongside water features such as ponds and streams.
