Metrosideros carminea, commonly known as the Crimson Rata Vine, is a sturdy climber that can grow up to 15 m tall if left untrimmed. If it has nothing to climb it will grow as a small shrub to about 2 m tall and 1 m wide. The lants carry dark green, leathery leaves and produce masses of bright red flowers from late winter through spring. Metrosideros carminea is commonly used as a standalone shrub or grown as a climber on a fence or the like.

It is fast growing and will reach 10 m if it has something to climb and left untrimmed. Pyrostegia venusta is commonly included in tropical or cottage gardens, planted for winter colour, used to cover a fence or other support structure, or allowed to cascade over a wall.
