Eucryphia cordifolia (Ulmo)
Commonly known as Ulmo, this is a handsome, evergreen tree renowned for both its attractive foliage and pleasant flowers. The sweetly fragrant flowers are white and are produced through summer. The foliage is silver-green with a leathery appearance. It can grow 20 m tall and 10 m wide but is often trimmed to sizes much less than this. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It can be grown in coastal environments and is frost tolerant. Commonly known as the Pine Nut, this is an attractive tree that has a variety of uses including the production of nuts. It grows with an upright and spreading habit with short, grey-green needles. Pine cones are produced when the tree is about six years old and within these cones are the edible nuts. This evergreen will eventually reach 10 m tall and 6 m wide, and performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site.
