Growing Olearia solandri Successfully in NZ

Olearia solandri (Coastal Tree Daisy) is a tough, fast-growing native shrub that thrives in New Zealand’s coastal and exposed environments. It prefers full sun and well-drained soils but tolerates poor, sandy, or dry conditions. This plant is wind-hardy and salt-tolerant, making it ideal for coastal gardens, shelterbelts, and erosion control. Water regularly during establishment, then only in prolonged dry spells. Its dense form also makes it excellent for hedging or screening.

Olearia solandri Care Tips

Water regularly during the first year to help Olearia solandri establish, especially in dry or sandy soils. Once established, it is drought- and wind-tolerant. Prune annually to maintain a tidy shape or dense hedge. Mulch to retain soil moisture and reduce weed competition, but keep mulch clear of the stem. This hardy plant rarely needs fertilising but may benefit from a light feed in spring if growth is slow. Ideal for low-maintenance, coastal planting.

Plant Size and Spacing

Olearia solandri typically grows 2–4 metres tall and 1–2 metres wide. For hedging, space plants 1 to 1.5 metres apart. In mixed plantings or as individual specimens, allow 1.5 to 2 metres between plants to accommodate natural spread.
