Escallonia ‘Newport Dwarf’ is a popular variety of Escallonia in NZ and renowned for both its attractive foliage and quaint flowers. Glossy, green foliage gives way to clusters of lightly scented, pink, trumpet shaped flowers with red overtones through spring and summer. It is an easily grown shrub with a bushy habit and typically grows to 1 m tall and the same wide. Best performance with this evergreen is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site, though it is hardy to moderate frost, some wind, and coastal conditions. Escallonia ‘Newport Dwarf’ is commonly included in a mixed or border planting, used in cottage gardens, or planted around outdoor living areas. It can also be trimmed into a hedge or maintained in a container. Space plants 40 cm apart for hedging.
