Ugli Fruit (Jamaican Tangelo)

Ugli Fruit is a cross between a Tangelo and a Grapefruit and is commonly known as a Jamaican Tangelo. The result is fruit that is of medium size, has an orange skin when ripe, and flesh that is juicy, with a sweet but subtly bitter taste. The fruit tends to be somewhat misshapen and ripens in winter. It typically grows to 2.5 m in height and 2 m in width, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. This variety is commonly grown for fruit production, added to a mixed planting, or maintained in a container.

How to grow Ugli Fruit in NZ

Ugli Fruit is best planted in a sunny, frost-free spot with well-draining soil. Enrich the soil with compost before planting and water regularly during dry periods. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Feed with citrus fertiliser in spring and summer. Protect young trees from strong winds and frost. Prune lightly to shape and remove dead wood. Ugli Fruit trees may take several years to fruit, but they reward with large, sweet, slightly tangy fruit once established.

What does Ugli Fruit taste like?

Ugli Fruit has a sweet, tangy flavour that’s a mix of orange, tangerine, and grapefruit. It’s less bitter than grapefruit, juicier than an orange, and has a refreshing citrus taste with a mild tartness. The flesh is tender and easy to peel, making it pleasant to eat fresh or use in juices and desserts.

Plant Size and Spacing

Ugli Fruit trees can grow 3-4 metres tall and 2-3 metres wide when mature. Space trees at least 3-4 metres apart to allow for good air circulation, light penetration, and ease of harvesting. In smaller gardens or for container growing, regular pruning can help maintain a more compact size.
