Common questions about growing Metasequoia

1. How big does a Metasequoia get?

Metasequoia, also known as dawn redwood, is a fast-growing deciduous tree that can reach heights of up to 50 metres and trunk diameters of up to 2 metres. In cultivation, it typically reaches heights of 40-45 metres. The tallest known Metasequoia tree is located in China and is 54 metres tall.

2. Where is Metasequoia native to?

Metasequoia trees are native to China and were thought to be extinct until they were rediscovered in 1941. They are now popular ornamental trees in many parts of the world.

3. What is the growth rate of Metasequoia?

Metasequoia is a fast-growing tree and in ideal conditions it can grow up to 1 metre per year for the first 10-15 years. After that, its growth rate will slow to about 60 cm per year.

4. How rare are dawn redwoods?

Dawn redwoods (Metasequoia glyptostroboides) are critically endangered in the wild. They are only found in a few small and scattered stands in central China. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species estimates that there are only 1,000-2,500 mature dawn redwoods remaining in the wild.

There are a number of reasons why dawn redwoods are so rare. One reason is habitat loss. Dawn redwoods grow in lowland forests, which are often cleared for agriculture and development. Another reason is overexploitation. Dawn redwoods were once heavily logged for their valuable timber. Conservation efforts are underway to protect dawn redwoods in the wild. However, the species remains at high risk of extinction.

5. Can you bonsai a dawn redwood?

Yes, you can bonsai a dawn redwood. Dawn redwoods are relatively easy to bonsai and are a good choice for beginners. They are vigorous growers and have good back-budding, which means that they will produce new branches even when pruned heavily.

To bonsai a dawn redwood, you will need to choose a young tree with a good trunk structure. The tree should be at least 1 year old and have a trunk that is at least 5-8 mm thick.
