Every homeowner dreams of a vibrant, lush lawn that welcomes friends and family, and allows children to play on. But achieving that picture-perfect turf starts with selecting the right lawn seed. With decades of experience in growing lawns, The Plant Company has determined that there are only four varieties that make up 99% of the lawns planted in NZ. Those four varieties of grass seed are Kikuyu, Fine Fescue, Tall Fescue, and Amenity Ryegrass. Each grass variety is specific to a particular climate, the amount of care they require, and how much they can be utilized (called ‘wear’) by children and pets. For example, a Fine Fescue lawn takes lot of care to look amazing but can not handle much wear. On the other hand, Amenity Ryegrass is used in sports parks, it requires the least care, and can take a lot of wear. This variety of grass seed is therefore perfect for areas where children will be playing. Kikuyu grass seed is perfect for coastal areas and other frost-free zones where the soils are of low quality. Tall Fescue is an in-between between fine fescue and amenity rye grass seed. That is, it has great aesthetics, requires some care, but can also take some wear.
Autumn and Spring are the best times to sow grass seed in NZ. During these times the soil temperatures are not too cold or too hot, so the seed will strike evenly and establish quickly. Soil moisture levels tend to also be optimal such that the seed is neither drowned nor baked! There are a few steps to successfully growing grass from seed in the summary below. 1. Choose the correct lawn seed.
2. Clear existing grass and weeds. Ideally you will have a seedbed that is both level and soft enough for the seeds to strike and establish.
3. Choose a day to sow your seeds when the weather looks to be warm and settled for a few days.
4. Rake the seed into the soil so it barely visible and water the soil lightly. The Plant Company recommends including new lawn fertiliser with the seed when spreading to not just see where you’ve been but to also provide the initial nutrition the seedlings will need.
5. Water the lawn daily such that it is constantly moist but not sodden. Any grass seed that dries out while germinating will be wasted.
