“Van Eseltine” is a variety of Crabapple grown for its prolific flowering, colourful fruits, and architectural form. Showy, pink flowers are borne in spring in such abundance that they literally transform the tree into a show of colour. These result in small, yellow fruit flushed with red in autumn. The fruit attract all manner of wildlife. The foliage in spring emerges mid-green, darkens during summer, then develops yellow tones in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 5 m tall and 2.5 m wide with a conical shape. Best performance with this variety is achieved when it is positioned in full sun on a fertile, well-drained site, protected from wind. It is tolerant of cool climates and frost, though late frosts in spring can reduce fruit yields. “Van Eseltine” is commonly grown as a specimen, maintained in a courtyard garden, used in an avenue planting, planted to border an entrance, or included in a mixed planting.
