“Echtermeyer” is a variety of Crabapple grown for its flowering, colourful fruits, and pendulous growth habit. It bears masses of large and showy, single, rose-red flowers through spring. These result in small, red-purple fruit in autumn which attract all manner of wildlife. The foliage emerges with a red tint in spring, ages to a bronze-green colour, and then develops colourful yellow and orange tones in autumn before falling. The fruit and foliage are held on pendulous branches that will reach to the ground. It typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site, that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates. “Echtermeyer” is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, or included anywhere it can be appreciated.
