“Moulin Rouge” is a bright and vibrant, NZ native shrub. New leaves emerge a deep purple colour with red-purple splotches and age to become dark purple-red with a green-yellow centre. The leaf colouring is truly impressive and is accentuated with small, yellow-green flowers in spring which result in small, dark berries. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It will tolerate coastal conditions, shaded positions, dry periods and frost once established. “Moulin Rouge” is a great plant for brightening up bland areas and is often planted around living areas, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or included in mixed and native plantings.
