“Tianzi” is a variety of the commonly known, Szechuan Green Peppercorn, and is an evergreen shrub grown for its spicy berries and foliage. At about three years of age it produces clusters yellow flowers during spring which result in the flavoursome, green berries during summer. It grows as a thorny, evergreen shrub with open branching to about 4 m tall and 3 m wide, and can easily be contained with trimming. This variety grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site, and is tolerant of moderate frost once established. “Tianzi” is commonly grown specifically for the berries, included in a mixed planting, or simply grown as something a little unusual.
