Carex buchananii, commonly known as Leatherleaf Sedge, is an attractive, NZ native, ornamental grass. It features very fine, brown leaves that are held with a graceful arch. It typically grows to 60 cm tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of wind, frost, cool climates, and dry periods. Leatherleaf Sedge is commonly included in mixed plantings and borders, mass planted either as a groundcover or on a bank, used in rock gardens, or simply grown in a container. Landscape gardeners in NZ will often use Carex buchananii to provide outstanding colour contrasts.
